The PLATO company was formed in 1990 after our founder, Dr John Ryan, realized that clinical coding would soon become a major challenge for healthcare providers- unless the process could be automated. Dr Ryan started our company to address this challenge.

In the early 1990s, few healthcare providers had electronic systems that would allow automation of the coding process. As a result, PLATO began its life developing clinical documentation, EPR and clinical governance solutions. That part of the company became successful in its own right and is widely recognised for its market-leading products and innovative approaches.

But clinical coding has always been the company's main focus. Coding patents were awarded in 1995 and 1998 as PLATO continued to refine its coding ideas into commercial products.
