The Coding Challenge >>
What are medical codes?
All over the world, healthcare facilities are required to code
diagnoses, procedures, outcomes and complications for reimbursement
and quality purposes.
There are many medical coding systems, including
variations of ICD9, ICD10, HCPCS, CPT, OPCS4, SNOMED, READ and
more. Currently these codes are assigned to medical records by
legions of highly skilled medical coders. These coders perform
a sophisticated task that requires them not only to generate codes
for every clinical encounter, but also to keep up-to-date with
complex regulatory and clinical changes.
It is no surprise that manual medical coding, or
even computer-assisted medical coding, is a difficult, time consuming
task that is frequently affected by backlogs and inaccuracy.
