Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) >>
CAC is defined as "the use of computer software that automatically generates a set of medical codes for review, validation and use based upon clinical documentation provided by healthcare practitioners". The latest Natural Language Processing theories are applied to derive codes from online documents. CAC seems an obvious solution for the complexities of coding.
The PLATOCODE® solution
is unique
The PLATOCODE® engine is not an ordinary Natural Language Processing
(NLP) system. It is a completely new process that does not rely
on batteries of rules or statistical estimations. As a result, the PLATOCODE solution is not limited to specialties where there is a small number of source documents for coding, a high volume of repetitive cases and a limited clinical vocabulary. The PLATOCODE® engine was designed to produce codes for ambulatory surgery - a highly expert coding task including the need for CPT codes. You can still code the simple stuff with the PLATOCODE® solution, but if you need to code more complex cases, you can do that too.
How does it work?
The patented PLATOCODE® process analyses the text and semantics
of a medical record in three dimensions. The system analyses each
word, each sentence and the entire context of the document before
determining appropriate codes. Under development by PLATO since
1992, this form of logic is often referred to as artificial intelligence
and is arguably the most advanced application in medical coding
today.
